DR DANIEL SURRIDGE

Colorectal Surgeon

Daniel Surridge is the former head of colorectal surgery at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and current unit head at Joburg Colorectal. He trained as an undergraduate in medicine at the University of Pretoria and then studied general surgery at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) after completing his internship and community service. Daniel underwent further subspecialist training in colorectal surgery at Wits. He worked as consultant and then head of colorectal surgery at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital until resigning from the state health system in 2022. During this time, Daniel has trained in UK, Germany and Spain. He was the first surgeon in state to perform a TaTME  procedure in South Africa and is the only colorectal surgeon in South Africa registered to use the Speedboat® device in complex polypectmies. He is a trained robotic surgeon

Daniel has a passion for laparoscopic and robotic surgery. He also manages anal pathology such as haemorrhoids and anal pain. He is very experienced with complex endoscopic management of polyps as well as low cancers of the rectum and anus.

Daniel will assist you with all of you colorectal needs as part of the multidisciplinary team.

DR JAMES PATTINSON

Colorectal Surgeon

James Pattinson is a subspecialist colorectal surgeon. He is acting head of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital and a senior consultant in the Joburg Colorectal team at Netcare Milpark Hospital.

James completed his undergraduate training (MBChB) at the University of Pretoria in 2010. He then specialised in general surgery in Pietermaritzburg through the University of Kwazulu-Natal. He became a fellow of the South African College of Surgeons (FCS(SA)) in 2018, and completed a Masters of Medicine (MMED) in 2019.

James completed his subspecialist training in Colorectal Surgery (CertGastro(SA)) at the University of the Witwatersrand in 2022. He is an associate lecturer at Wits University and an advanced trauma life support (ATLS) instructor.

DR ETHEL ANDREWS

Stomatherapist and Wound Care Specialist

Dr Ethel Andrews is an Advanced Wound Specialist who holds a Doctorate from the University of Witwatersrand in Burns. She has completed the International Interdisciplinary Wound Care Course with the University of Toronto. Ethel has been inducted as a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Witwatersrand. She qualified as an enterostomal therapist after completion of an internationally recognized WCET® (World Council of Enterostomal Therapists) and SASA (South African Stomaltherapy Association) course. Ethel Is the first recipient from Africa to receive the Baskent University Nursing award in Mexico in 2022 for her contribution to the advancement of nursing globally.

Mostly in the areas mentioned above.

MR PIERRE MATTHEE

Social Worker 

Pierre Matthee is a social worker who holds a Master’s degree in Social Work (health care) through the University of Pretoria. Medical social work is a specialized sub-discipline of social work which works with patients and their families in need of psychological and social support. Pierre assess the psychological and social functioning of patients and families with health-related issues and intervenes as necessary. Pierre works to restore balance in an individual’s personal, family and social life, in order to help that person maintain, or recover his/her health and strengthen his/her ability to adapt and reintegrate into society.
